Autograph letter signed : London, to Arthur Moore, 1889 Nov. 16 [and 18].

Mentioning a trip to the races that will prevent his usual Sunday letter. Discussing his affair with Bertha Van Raalte, and stating that her father "may be a doting parent [but] is at least an inefficient duenna." Agreeing that Moore is right in disliking "Gortsachoff's" (i.e., the Foltinowicz restaurant) and stating that "the environment -- with th exception of Minnie Terry (i.e., Adelaide Foltinowicz) -- would depress [Moore]." Resuming the letter on Monday (i.e., the 18th) and describing an evening spent with "Miss Cigarettovitch" (i.e., Bertha Van Raalte), Swanton and a "2nd damigellina" of Swanton's acquaintance. Noting that they repaired to the Anglo-Austrian and "spent a most profitable & platonic evening on the sofa, 'each with each, ' until 10 o'clock." Hoping to introduce Moore to his "latest Amaryllis."
